When you’re ready to choose a kayak trailer it’s logical to look at what’s being offered by some of the best-known manufacturers. Malone has been making trailers, cargo boxes, and other vehicle accessories for over 18 years.

They have built a reputation for quality products and excellent customer service. The question is whether this Malone kayak trailer is as good as it suggests. The Malone MicroSport Kayak Trailer featured #1 on our Best Kayak Trailers list.

It should be noted that this is a great option for carrying kayaks and bikes without the hassle of lifting them onto your vehicle. However, if you prefer to carry the kayaks on the roof of your car you’ll need one of these racks instead.

The Basics

This simplistic-looking trailer is designed to carry up to 4 kayaks. Although, you could also use it to transport 2 kayaks and some canoes, or bikes.

This has been achieved by the simplistic, functional, yet sturdy design. The long tongue attached to a standard receiver should fit most hitches without an issue.

Top Tip: If it doesn’t fit your hitch you can unbolt your hitch and replace it very easily; matching the new hitch to this trailer.

The long tongue allows this trailer to carry canoes or kayaks up to 20ft long. That’s big enough for most people. You’ll also note the safety chains and electrics by the receiver, ready to be connected; ensuring safety and compliance with the law.

Quality of Build

The rear lights are LED and waterproof, you can back the trailer into the water if you wish. This is alongside the galvanized steel frame, designed to cope with the harshest of environments and last you for years.

The entire frame, including two 60 inch crossbars is made from galvanized steel, supported by a standard axle, shock absorbers, and 12-inch wheels; these are also galvanized and have slots to ensure ventilation and prevent heat buildup.

The wheels are sealed and maintenance-free, helping to protect them if they do go in the water. They are also backed by a 2-year warranty from Malone, which should give you peace of mind regarding the quality of this trailer.

The quality of the construction is backed up by Malone with a good warranty. You will, of course, need to assemble the trailer yourself. However, you should be able to do this within 3-5 hours with the comprehensive instructions supplied.

The Malone MicroSport Kayak Trailer weighs just 132 pounds; that makes it very easy to maneuver when empty or even with the kayaks on. This is especially useful if you’re at a busy spot and have limited access room for your trailer at the drop-in point.

You’ll notice that the distance between the first crossbar and the front hitch is 9ft. In reality, this means you can place a 20ft kayak on the trailer, with the middle of the kayak being behind the crossbar and still have one foot between the front of the kayak and the hitch. That’s enough clearance to get around any corner!

This Malone MicroSport Kayak Trailer is designed to carry as much as 800 pounds; that’s plenty enough for 4 kayaks or a combination of kayaks and bikes.

Securing The Kayaks

There are two galvanized steel crossbars, your kayaks can sit directly onto these. You’ll then need to use a ratchet strap to ensure the kayaks are snug and won’t move in transit. There are several spots where you can secure the ratchet straps too.

If you’re looking to carry bikes as well then you can lay them on the trailer and tie them down. But, the preferred option is to collect a bike roof rack system.  Most systems will clamp directly onto the crossbars of this Microsport trailer, allowing you to secure your bikes into position in a matter of minutes.

It should be noted that the trailer does not have a locking mechanism. If you think security could be an issue you’ll need to get a hitch lock and secure the kayaks or bikes with a locking cable.

The design of this trailer is deliberately simple to ensure you can mount various different pieces of equipment. It should be noted that you can purchase J cradles and attach them to the crossbars of the trailer; making it much easier to store the kayaks safely and effectively.

Some people simply leave their kayaks on the trailer and slide it into their garage. This is fine if you have enough room. However, a viable alternative option is to fit the black rubber straps to the back of the trailer. The strips come with the parts and are listed in the assembly instructions. Their purpose is simply to protect the trailer if you stand it up on its end; obviously, you’ll need to remove and store the kayaks first.

You can also purchase a retracting tongue, allowing you to reduce the height required to store the trailer in this way. You’ll only need a height of eight and a half feet; which should fit in most garages.

Additional Points

The Malone Kayak Trailer for is a great bit of kit. It’s light, maneuverable, can be used for a variety of different purposes, and the ultimate accessory for anyone interested in kayaking and cycling.

But, nothing is perfect! The crossbars on this trailer are approximately 18 inches off the ground, this is a fair height if you’re having to lift a large and heavy kayak into position by yourself. Of course, it could be argued that it is still much easier than lifting a kayak onto the roof of your vehicle; but it is worth noting this point.

Secondly, although the trailer is relatively light, it is not easy to maneuver by hand on grass or other rough surfaces. Adding a tongue wheel can help but it will still fight you; especially if the kayaks are not evenly weighted, encouraging the trailer to move in circles.

Final Thoughts

As with any trailer or load-carrying device, there are a few issues that could be improved on. But, in general, this is a trailer that does the role it is designed for and does it well. The fact that it is reasonably priced and easy to assemble makes it one of the best kayak trailers currently available.

If you haven’t considered this Malone Kayaks Trailer already then it’s definitely worth adding to the top of your list.
